On the diffractive production of charmed baryons

Abstract

Arguments are presented in favour of observing charmed baryons in diffractive scattering at high energies. The cross section for production of charmed baryons is estimated to be ∼ 10–100 μb at ISR energies.

Hadronic production of charm via flavour excitation

We present a calculation of the contribution of flavour excitation diagrams to the hadronic production of open charm. The main new ingredients in the calculation are: (i) a proper treatment of the QCD evolution of the input charm sea distribution, with constraints from the existing charm structure function data; (ii) use of the available charm transverse momentum data to fix the $t ̂_{min}$ cutoff which regulates the $t ̂ ⋍ 0$ divergence in the diagrams. We are then able to make a stable calculation of the resulting charm cross section. The flavour excitation contribution turns out to be an order of magnitude larger than for fusion. As a result the observed magnitudes of the charm cross section at accelerator and ISR energies are satisfactorily reproduced, thus eliminating a long standing difficulty of the perturbative QCD approach to open charm production. Furthermore, we calculate the longitudinal and transverse spectra of charmed hadrons using a simple recombination model. We show that the existing ISR data on the production of fast Λ_c are well, and naturally, reproduced by this approach. Qualitative predictions for bottom production are also discussed.

We review the experimental and theoretical results of the last decade on diffractive phenomena in nucleon-nucleon interactions at very high energies.
Hadronic diffraction is a subject of great interest from the experimental viewpoint, since it represents a body of fundamental processes contributing substantially to the total interaction probability. This subject is also of great theoretical importance, since a description of diffraction in terms of fundamental constituents, quarks and gluons is strictly connected with the spatial properties of hadron confinement, one of the major topics in present theoretical high energy physics.
The connections between classical and quantum diffraction are discussed in a theoretical framework extended to include constituent models. The features of elastic scattering, inclusive and exclusive inelastic diffraction data from CERN ISR and Fermilab are reviewed and discussed in terms of the main theoretical models. The recent evidence for diffractive production of charmed particles is also considered. Data on higher order diffractive processes, such as double diffraction and double Pomeron exchange, and their role in the general understanding of diffractive are discussed in detail.
Light nuclear systems are considered as targets and projectiles in high energy diffractive collisions, and shown to provide additional new insight in elementary nucleon-nucleon diffraction, through peculiar interference effects among multiple scattering terms. In particular a definite evidence for the peripherality of inelastic diffraction is found by coherent production of nucleons on deuteron. Factorization is found to be one of the most remarkable properties of double diffraction and its relatively important weight in building up the total cross section shows the slow convergence of the diffractive series.
In addition a strict correlation between the rise of the proton-proton total cross section and the peripheral nature of inelastic diffraction emerges clearly from the overall discussion. The findings emphasize the importance of diffraction for the understanding of the confining hadron structure and its interaction dynamics.
As a conclusion we discuss the natural extension of the present knowledge of diffractive phenomena at higher energies and the future prospects of the next generation of high energy proton colliders.
Diffractive production of the charmed baryon Λ<sup>+</sup><inf>c</inf> at the CERN ISR

In a sample of diffractive events of high multiplicity a sharp five standard deviation signal is observed at M = 2255 MeV/c² in the K⁻pπ⁺ mass distribution and, although with less statistical strength, at the same mass in the Λ⁰π⁺π⁺π⁻ channel. These signals are identified as being due to the decay of the charmed baryon Λ⁺_c which is produced with a cross section times branching ratio σ_cB in the range 0.7−1.8 μb for the K⁻π⁺p decay and 0.3−0.7 μb for the Λ^-π⁺π⁺ π⁻ system.
