Social odour activates the hippocampal formation in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata)
2019, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :The head was severed from the body, the skin was removed and the head was stored in 4% PFA at the refrigerator for 4–6 weeks until processing. For removal of the brains from the skulls, the heads were oriented at 45° in a stereotaxic head holder specifically designed for zebra finches [59]. The caudal part of the skull was opened and a coronal plane cut (0.5 mm posterior to the Y-point) was made with a scalpel blade attached to a micromanipulator.
Visual Wulst analyses "where" and entopallium analyses " what" in the zebra finch visual system
2011, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Next, the birds received bilateral Wulst lesions. The birds were anesthetized by an injection of 0.04 ml Equithesin and fixed onto a stereotaxic head holder especially designed for small birds [3]. Stereotaxic coordinates were obtained from our zebra finch brain atlas [10].
Hippocampal activation of immediate early genes Zenk and c-Fos in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during learning and recall of a spatial memory task

2008, Behavioural Brain ResearchAfferentation of the lateral nidopallium: A tracing study of a brain area involved in sexual imprinting in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata)
2006, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :The original research reported herein was performed under guidelines established by the German Welfare Law and permitted by the responsible state authority. The birds were anaesthetized by an intramuscular injection of Equithesin (0.4 ml/100 g body weight) and mounted with the bird head fixed in a stereotaxic holder for small birds (Bischof, 1981). The brain surface was exposed and small injections (∼50 nl) of a 3% solution of the fluorescent retrograde tracer Rhodamine-B-isothiocyanate (RITC-Sigma) in 2% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) made using glass micropipettes with inner tip diameter of about 10 μm into different regions of the lateral nidopallium and lateral mesopallium.
