Abstract

  • 1.

    1. The sterol composition of Ircinia foetida and Ircinia variabilis (phylum Porifera, order Dictyoceratida, family Spongiidae) was investigated by silver nitrate-silica gel column chromatography and by spectroscopy methods.

  • 2.

    2. Sponges contain mainly Δ5,7-sterols accompanied by Δ7-sterols; a small quantity of cholesterol is also present. The sterols from I. foetida and I. variabilis are qualitatively similar, while the quantitative content of some components is different.

  • 3.

    3. In addition to known sterols the sponges contain two new sterols which were identified as (24E)-24-ethylcholesta-5,7,24(28)-trien-3β-ol and 24-propylcholesta-5,7,24(28)-trien-3β-ol, respectively.
