Size and morphology of the vesicles are suggestive of affinities to zoosporic fungi, algae, coccoid cyanobacteria, or arthropod eggs (Karling, 1977; Golubic and Campbell, 1979; Prescott, 1980; Brendonck and De Meester, 2003). Associated with the distal portions of some of the trichomes are globose to pear-shaped vesicles (up to ~20 μm in diameter), which are reminiscent of the epibiotic zoosporangia seen in certain monocentric chytrids, such as members of the genus Rhizophydium (e.g., Karling, 1977; Takano et al., 2008; Letcher and Powell, 2012).
