Abstract

In the present discussion of state versus market, which takes place in all Western societies as well as in postcommunist countries, the third part of the triangle, civil society, including the family, is often neglected. Out of four models of modern gender ideologies and practices, the double burden model with or without state intervention is the most widespread for women. Therefore, women in all industrialized, urban societies with a market economy need state intervention on their behalf. The article identifies six types of state intervention needed from a feminist perspective. In democratic societies in general, women have better chances of influencing the state than the market. Consequently, women's political empowerment becomes crucial.
