2020, Journal of Environmental RadioactivityCitation Excerpt :Greylag geese (Anser anser) and European wigeon (Anas penelope) feeding in saltwater marshes containing radioactivity originating from the Sellafield reprocessing plant in the U.K. during 1980–81 had average levels of 58 Bq kg−1 and 158 Bq kg−1 of 137Cs in the breast muscle, respectively (Lowe and Horrill, 1986). Mallards and red-breasted mergansers (Mergus serrator) collected near the Sellafield plant during 1980–84 contained average levels of 167 Bq kg−1 and 144 Bq kg−1 of 137Cs in pectoral muscle, respectively (Lowe, 1991). Some waterfowl collected from radioactive leaching ponds in the United States during the mid-1970s contained over 100,000 Bq kg−1 fresh wt in breast muscle (Halford et al., 1981; Holloway, 1990) with average values on the order of about 27,000 Bq kg−1 fresh wt (Halford et al., 1981).

The studies on gull (Larus marinus) showed higher plutonium concentrations in liver in comparison to muscles (Lowe, 1991). Polish studies about 238Pu and 239+240Pu taken on carnivorous white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina) living in northern Poland showed higher plutonium concentrations in comparison to big herbivorous mammals but lower in comparison to small insectivores (Mietelski et al., 2006).

However, there were few site-specific data against which predictions could be validated; data for the Drigg dunes were limited to a few isolated measurements of radionuclides in marram grass (Nellis, 1990) and birds (Lowe, 1991). Therefore, there was limited scope to successfully characterise radionuclide activity concentrations in soil at the Drigg dunes, based on existing data.
