Indeed, delayed lipofuscin accumulation is in agreement with other studies reporting lipofuscin accumulations in the gastropod L. littorea after 3 days recovery from an exposure to phenanthrene (Pipe and Moore, 1986) and a reversible reduction of fluid-phase endocytosis (involved in feeding and normal membrane and cell receptor recycling) in the same species after an initial 5-day exposure to fluoranthene and 8 days recovery (Lowe et al., 2006). Cellular biomarkers using histochemistry in freshwater molluscs were developed too recently to fully understand the different response patterns to various stressors of the lysosomal system and of associated digestive unsaturated neutral lipid and lipofuscin contents.

The intracellular accumulation of neutral lipids in lysosomes of digestive cells of molluscs has been found, upon the exposure to organic chemicals of different physicochemical properties (Wolfe et al., 1981; Pipe and Moore, 1986; Lowe and Clarke, 1989; Cajaraville, 1991; Regoli, 1992, Lowe and Pipe, 1994; and Marigómez and Baybay-Villacorta, submitted). Intracellular lipid accumulation, in response to organic chemical pollution, has been also reported in field studies: increasing oil red 0 (OR0) staining in digestive gland cells is correlated with increasing levels of PAH and PCB pollution (Moore, 1988; Krishnakumar et al., 1994).
