Abstract

An algorithm for the development of a variable-scale map projection is presented and the code given in C. Such constructs have applications in urban areas where the central zones, which are detailed densely are to be displayed at a larger scale than the surrounding suburbs which are more extensive, but with sparser mappable features.

This paper explores the possibilities and implications of spatial representation using virtual reality (VR) tools. Concepts of VR and its linkages with cartography are examined and the non-deterministic nature of VR as a data exploration tool is discussed. The use of the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) is introduced and a project to employ conventional map data in a VRML “virtual world” is described. Further technical issues related to the use of VRML are mentioned.
