Abstract

A variety of diacetylenes have been prepared and characterized. Both symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted types are discussed with regard to their polymerization and to their potential as liquid crystalline or optoelectronic materials.

Synthesis of n-chloroquinolines and n-ethynylquinolines (n=2, 4, 8): Homo and heterocoupling reactions

The n-(ethynyl)quinolines were satisfactorily prepared by heterocoupling reaction between the appropriate n-chloroquinoline and 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol, catalyzed by palladium, followed by treatment with a catalytic amount of powdered sodium hydroxide in toluene. The n-(ethynyl)quinolines were transformed in the corresponding conjugate 1,4-bis[n′-(quinolyl)]buta-1,3-diynes by oxidative dimerization, catalyzed by cuprous chloride, with excellent yields. Moreover, the heterocoupling between n′-haloquinoline and n′-(ethynyl)quinoline (n′, 2′ or 3′), catalyzed by palladium, gives 2′,2′-bis(quinoline) or 1,2-di(3′-quinolyl)ethyne, respectively. The same coupling reaction with zerovalent nickel complexes, gives a mixture of 1,2,4- and 1,3,5-tri(n′-quinolyl)benzene.
π-extended conjugate phenylacetylenes. Synthesis of 4-[(E) and (Z)-2-(4-ethenylphenyl)ethenyl]pyridine. Dimerization, quaternation and formation of charge-transfer complexes

The conjugate (E)- and (Z)-(4′-pyridylethenyl)-4-phenylethyne (E-4 and Z-4) has been satisfactorily prepared by two different routes: (a) by dehydrohalogenation of 4′-pyridylethenyl-4-phenyl-β-chloroethene; (b) by the Wittig reaction between p-(iodobenzyl)(triphenyl)phosphine ylide and 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, E/Z isomer separation, and cross-coupling with 2-methyl-but-3-yn-2-ol followed the propanone elimination. The Glaser oxidative dimerization of (Z)-4 yields (Z,Z)-1,4-di[(4′-pyridylethenyl)-4-phenyl]-buta-1,3-diyne in good yield, (Z,Z)-5. (E,E)-5 was obtained by phase transfer oxidative dimerisation of (E)-4 in presence of their N-methyl salt (E)-10. Mono- and di-N-methylated salts of conjugate (E,E)-5 and (Z,Z)-5, were obtained by quaternation with iodomethane. The (Z,Z)-5 di-N-methylated salt forms charge–transfer complexes with TCNE, TCNQ and TMPD.
Flash vacuum pyrolysis of stabilised phosphorus ylides. Part 16. Model studies for the construction of conjugated polymers

Reaction of a range of bis(ylides) with acid chlorides has been used to prepare the bis(oxoylides) 11–15. Similarly a range of simple ylides react with bis(acid chlorides) to give bis(oxoylides) 19–27 with the isomeric structure. Flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of one example of the first type results in extrusion of Ph₃P rather than the expected Ph₃PO while six examples of the second type do extrude Ph₃PO upon FVP at 500 °C to afford the bis(alkynes) 28. Examples of the corresponding bis(tributylphosphonium ylides) have also been prepared but attempts to construct a tetrakis(oxoylide) 31 using a stepwise approach were unsuccessful. Fully assigned ¹³C NMR spectra are presented for six of the bis(oxoylides).
Coulombic screening in polydiacetylene crystals

The strong colour of polydiacetylene polymer crystals is due to the backbone exciton. The energy of the exciton is strongly affected by Coulombic interactions with the surrounding crystalline environment. X-ray diffraction and optical absorption measurements of the blue phase polymer crystals of 4BCMU show that a change in the energy of the polydiacetylene backbone exciton can be related to a change in the inter-backbone spacing within the crystals. Over the range of inter-backbone spacings measured, this variation is in very good agreement with Coulombic screening theory. It is calculated from these results that inter-backbone Coulombic screening lowers the value of the exciton energy in the blue phase polymer crystals of 4BCMU by −0.362eV, which is 15.4% of the total exciton energy. Coulombic screening is shown to have an important effect on the optical absorption properties of other polydiacetylene derivatives. Calculations and resonant Raman spectroscopy measurements show that a combination of a low level of Coulombic screening and strain in the crystal lattice accounts for the red colour of the polymer crystals of PTS-12 and TCDU.
Rigid-rod derived amorphous polydiacetylenes

During our investigations of diacetylene monomers that exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystal phase behaviour, it was discovered that spontaneous and rapid thermal polymerization of the isotropic monomer melt takes place with some of the compounds examined. In the diacetylene monomer series containing symmetrically disubstituted 4-oxybenzylidene-4′-n-octylaniline (OBOA) side-groups attached to a butadiyne core via a polymethylene spacer, monomer liquid crystallinity is seen in the lower members of the series yet facile polymerization in the isotropic monomer melt is observed only in the lowest member of the series. This compound, 1OBOA, is believed to be rod-like in structure. It is this microstructural architecture that is believed to be responsible for imparting this unique combination of polymerization and polymer properties. Traditional molecularly flexible diacetylene monomers and the more flexible homologues in the nOBOA series do not show such facile melt-phase reactivity and do not allow the synthesis of purely amorphous conjugated polymer films.
