Stratification and productivity in the Western Tethys (NW Algeria) during early Toarcian
2022, Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, PalaeoecologyCitation Excerpt :The common occurrence of ammonites, brachiopods and foraminifera provides a precise biostratigraphic frame enabling the recognition of the Emaciatum Ammonite Zone (Elisa Subzone), the Polymorphum Ammonite Zone (Mirabile and Semicelatum subzones) and the Levisoni Ammonite Zone (Elmi et al., 2006; Reolid et al., 2014a). The second region of study is located in the Atlas system, which represents the southern palaeo-margin of the western Tethys and possesses a geometry directly inherited from the Early Mesozoic rifting of both the Central Atlantic and the Alpine Tethys domains (Aït Ouali, 1991; Favre et al., 1991). The successions studied belong to the Sahara Atlas, which is a slightly deformed Meso-Cenozoic intracontinental mountain chain (Frizon de Lamotte et al., 2009), extending from the Moroccan Middle and High Atlas to the West, and passing into the Tunisian Trough to the East.
Climate controls on tufa deposition over the last 5000 years: A case study from Northwest Africa
2022, Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, PalaeoecologyCitation Excerpt :The major faults, with a left-lateral strike-slip component, broadly trend NE-SW. This structural framework is the evidence of a polyphase geodynamic evolution that involves a progressive inversion of the Mesozoic Tethys rifting (Favre et al., 1991; Laville et al., 2004; de Lamotte et al., 2009) to a contractional regime accommodated by the convergence between Africa and Eurasia (Rosenbaum et al., 2002). The general trending NE-SW of the major structures are the heritage of the Hercynian orogeny (Charrière, 1990; Piqué and Laville, 1996).

2020, Earth-Science ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Actually, the restoration of the Ketama Unit to its initial position freed up a space at the north of the Rif basin, where it joins the Maghrebian Tethys (Fig. 15 a). Such an interpretation is consistent with the paleogeographic affinities of the Senhadja, sampling the North African distal margin (Favre et al., 1991; Favre, 1992; Gimeno-Vives et al., 2019). The propagation of the North-Maghrebian subduction continued westward (Fig. 15 b’) and crossed the Nekor Fault Zone, entering within the Rif basin.
