Abstract

We have found four types of possible steady-state solutions to the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations which describe extremely intense pulse propagation in a resonant medium. This is possible due to the replacement of the usual slowly varying envelope approximation by the assumption that (c/V-1)/ωτ « 1, where V is the pulse speed and τ is the pulse duration. We ignore possible non-resonant losses and set T1 = T2 = ∞.
