Abstract

If there are spin-dependent terms in a forward scattering amplitude, their imaginary parts are related to total cross sections with suitable incident polarizations.

Test of time-reversal symmetry in the proton-deuteron system

Internal target experiments with high-quality proton beams allow for a new class of experiments providing null tests of time-reversal symmetry in forward scattering. This could yield more stringent limits on T-odd P-even observables. An excellent candidate for such experiments is the proton-deuteron system. This system is analyzed in terms of effective T-violating P-conserving nucleon-nucleon interactions and bounds on coupling strengths that might be expected are given.
Energy dependence of the neutron-proton total cross section differences Δσ<inf>T</inf> and Δσ<inf>L</inf> between 0.31 and 1.1 GeV

Final results for total cross section differences Δσ_T and Δσ_L measured with a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target are presented. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 11 energies between 0.63 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ_T and at 9 energies between 0.312 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ_L. The results are compared with measurements at PSI and LAMPF as well as with Δσ_L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments at the ANL-ZGS. The present results together with the corresponding pp data allow to determine two of the three imaginary parts of forward scattering amplitudes for isospin I = 0.
Measurement of Δσ<inf>L</inf> in pp scattering between 200 and 583 MeV

The main structure around m = 2.15 GeV first observed by the Argonne group in the spin-dependent total cross section Δσ_L is confirmed in the energy range available at SIN. A simultaneous study of the scattered particles at small angles has been carried out with success and gave the spin-correlation parameter A_00kk for the pp elastic scattering and for the reaction pp → π⁺d. The contribution of the 3-body reactions to this spin-dependent total cross section has been deduced and found to be lower than the contribution of the π⁺d reaction even at 583 MeV.
Polarisation effects in inclusive reactions

Various possible polarisation measurements are distinguished, and their theoretical significance is discussed. (i) It has previously been noticed that simple Regge pole models forbid polarisation effects for the non-fragmenting particle. We propose an absorptive mechanism which can give rise to polarisation asymmetry in this limit and detail the distinctive predictions of this model. We comment on the implications of duality in the missing mass for these polarisation effects. (ii) There are no dynamical reasons for polarisation effects to be forbidden for the fragmenting particle or its fragment. We propose the use of polarisation effects in this kinematic region as a sensitive test of factorisation. (iii) We suggest a number of experiments, with and without polarised targets.
Theoretical consideration of a spin-polarized electron source based on elastic electron-hydrogen spin-exchange collisions

This paper describes the theoretical basis of a pulsed source of polarized electrons that, in principle, should yield very high intensity and polarization. The expected average intensity would be several orders of magnitude greater than anything previously attained or proposed (see ref. 4). The method employs polarization transfer from state selected and mechanically trapped (as in hydrogen maser) neutral hydrogen atoms in the F = 1, M_F = 1 state to magnetically trapped low energy ( $$ ̌ 10 eV$ ) electrons through the mechanism of elastic electron-hydrogen spin-exchange collisions. There are two important features of this device. One is that a large interaction volume between electrons and hydrogen atoms is to be used by utilizing the capability to trap state selected hydrogen atoms without serious depolarization. The other is the unique method of filling and trapping low energy electrons in sufficient density without exciting the hydrogen. It is shown that by using an interaction volume of ≈ 10³ cm³ or so, and electron density of ≈ 10⁸e⁻/cm³, it is possible to develop a pulsed source (10³ Hz) yielding ≈ 10¹⁴e⁻/sec, with polarization $P_{e} ⪆ 0.9$ . The source emittance at a source of energy of ≈ 100 keV will be comparable to that of present nonpolarized thermionic sources used with linear electron accelerators. A prototype device which is now being placed in operation will also be discussed. The final device (or modified version of it) could be useful in atomic physics, nuclear physics, and high-energy particle physics.
