Reduced sediment export to the Pennsylvania Lake Erie littoral zone during an era of average lake levels
2021, Journal of Great Lakes ResearchCitation Excerpt :The entire coastal system comprises three large littoral cells that lie along the western bluff coast (the WECLC of this study; Fig. 1), the central sandy coast (Presque Isle littoral cell; Foyle and Norton, 2006; Mohr et al., 1999; Nummedal et al., 1984; USACE 1984), and the eastern bluff coast (Knuth, 2001). The largest littoral sediment transport volumes occur locally in the Presque Isle cell, potentially reaching ~ 209,000 m3/yr along the erosional neck of the flying sand spit (Cross et al., 2016; Foyle and Norton, 2006; Nummedal et al., 1984). Elsewhere, littoral sand transport is about an order of magnitude lower.
Punctuated decadal morphodynamics and coupled vegetation succession along a nontidal, wave-dominated Great Lakes barrier spit, Gull Point, Lake Erie, U.S.A.
2021, Journal of Great Lakes ResearchCitation Excerpt :Extension here occurs by migration of megacusps (with a typical spacing of ~ 750 m) and the welding of offshore bars to the beach along the distal end (Nummedal, 1978). The actively growing portion of Presque Isle receives the lowest annual wave power (in the lee of the peninsula proper); the surf zone here is narrow and the shoreface profile is the steepest (Nummedal et al., 1984). Gull Point serves as a natural, unobstructed laboratory for observing the interactions between lake hydrodynamics and spit geomorphology along a nontidal, wave-dominated coastal barrier system.
