Abstract

The method of harmonic balance is used to develop approximate analytical solutions to the equations of motion of a single impact pair including a general discussion of the existence and stability of these solutions. Non-linear frequency response characteristics are obtained for a single frequency excitation and primary resonance (no subharmonic or superharmonic response) and the results are validated using an analog computer simulation. It has been found that the use of digital simulation (numerical integration) may lead to inaccurate results over certain frequency ranges. It is also shown that, although the shapes of the force-displacement relationship for clearance non-linearity and the classic cubic non-linearity are similar, the resulting non-linear frequency response curves can be quite different. Various issues related to the clearance non-linearity problem are discussed.

Finally, the equivalent radiated sound power (ERP) [25] is calculated based on the simulation results for each harmonic for rattling and non-rattling configurations. Compared to previous studies as [20–24], many more harmonics are taken into account, which has the advantage of being able to predict the test bed acoustic behavior. This approach enables the assessment of rattling and non-rattling configurations.

In recent years, gear rattle has attracted much attention by various researchers. For example, the nonlinear dynamic problem has been studied in Ref. [1]. The dynamic model of single degree-of-freedom gear system was established in Ref. [2], and the influence of gear backlash on the nonlinear dynamic response of the system was studied.
