Abstract

Li3N is presented as one of the best solid lithium electrolytes available today. Its outstanding advantages are simple preparation of crystalline as well as sintered material, stability in moist atmosphere because of a protecting surface layer, stability with elemental lithium metal up to its melting point of 813°C, high Li-ion conductivity of the order of 10−3 Ω−1 cm−1 at ambient temperature with negligible partial electronic conductivity, and a high decomposition voltage due to a strong kinetic hindrance of the decomposition reaction. Additional work has to be focused on optimization of the Li3N sinter preparation and on the kinetics of potential electrodes which can be used for a lithium-based battery with an Li3N electrolyte.

The EDS spectrum in Fig. S11 clarifies the homogenous distribution of N element on the top of LAG, and the corresponding N 1s XPS spectrum in Fig. S12 also supports the presence of Li3N (399.6 eV) on the LAG surface. Li3N is a promising SEI component with a high ionic conductivity of 10‒3 S cm−1 to facilitate the fast migration of Li+ through SEI and stabilize the electrode/electrolyte interface [45]. It can also account for the reduced overpotential and prolonged cycling life of the LAG symmetric cell as shown in Fig. 3d−g.
