Abstract

The absorption spectrum of the neutral nickel atom has been obtained using a special, newly constructed, pressurized graphite furnace. The behaviour of many Ni I-line profiles in the wavelength range 3600-3200 Å has been studied under various furnace temperatures and under various helium and argon pressures. Our measurements of Ni I broadened line widths have been compared with those provided from the theory of line broadening by interaction of Ni-Ni atoms and Ni-foreign gas atoms.

Experimental values of van der Waals interaction constants, C6, and those of the collision parameter ϱ0 have been determined. These C6-values have been compared with the results of theoretical calculations.

Relative log gf-values have been derived from the measurements of the equivalent line widths and have been reduced to an absolute scale. Absolute log gf-values for many Ni I-lines have been compared with experimental values published by other investigators.
