Generally, THMs concentrations in tap waters in several countries do not exceed admissible levels, though incidentally the concentrations of individual THMs will exceed 100 μg/L, which is the Maximum Contaminant Level for total THM, and the level of all THMs would be of the order of several hundred μg/L (Biziuk and Przyjazny, 1996; Ikem, 2010; Chowdhury et al., 2011). In Poland the maximum contaminant level for total THMs in tap waters was exceeded in one sample out of 6973 (Jamsheer-Bratkowska et al., 2009).

The NTD technique, first introduced by Pawliszyn and coworkers in 2001 [24], combines the concept of miniaturized exhaustive active sampling as well as passive diffusive sampling with newly created microextraction techniques.

Many methods for the determination of THMs and other VOCs in water have been reviewed in literatures [13–17]. The development and optimisation of sensitive, rapid and simple analytical methods is essential for monitoring THM concentrations in drinking water and for a better understanding of their formation and removal in distribution systems.
