The impact of this discovery from the Gehring’s laboratory, which was also reported by Scott and Weiner using a similar approach (Scott and Weiner, 1984) following the work of the Kaufman laboratory on the ANT-C (Scott et al., 1983; Wakimoto and Kaufman, 1981), was immediate and has been discussed in many instances (e.g. (Akam, 1984). Yet two points are of special interest in the context of this short essay, both related to the presence of a homeobox in all homeotic genes belonging either to ANT-C or to BX-C.

2022, Developmental BiologyCitation Excerpt :It contains five genes each with homeobox, labial, proboscipedia, Deformed, Sex combs reduced and Antennapedia, whose functions control the identity of cephalic and anterior (T1 and T2) thoracic segments. Work from the Kaufman group reported the phenotypes of the ANT-C mutants (Wakimoto and Kaufman, 1981) as well as the molecular organization of the complex (Scott et al., 1983; Kaufman et al., 1990). Interestingly, unlike the BX-C, the ANT-C includes genes like fushi tarazu, bicoid, zerknüllt (zen) and zerknüllt-2 (z-2) that play important developmental roles but are not homeotic in character.

ANTP-C includes labial (lab), proboscipedia (pb), Deformed (Dfd), Sex combs reduced (Scr), and Antennapedia (Antp), which regulate development of the anterior region of the embryo, thereby defining the segmental identities from head to thorax (Wakimoto and Kaufman, 1981). Genes in the BX-C are Ultrabithorax (Ubx), abdominal-A (abd-A), and Abdominal-B (Abd-B); they are responsible for determining identities of the thoracic and abdominal segments (Sánchez-Herrero et al., 1985).
