The nonconvex NLP and MINLP formulations involve a number of smoothing parameters and are difficult to implement and solve to global optimality in comparison to many of the other methods presented here, however techniques such as these provide excellent process integration, with higher degrees of accuracy. In reactive mass exchange problems, El-Halwagi and Srinivas (1992), developed a method for synthesising isothermal reactive MENs (REAMENs). In the REAMENs addressed by these authors, a two-step approach was adopted.
