Virella et al. investigated the effect of autologous red blood cells on B cell activity and they reported a significant increase in the secretion of immunoglobulins and of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IFN-γ [104]. Finally, a recent study reported that red blood cells promoted eosinophil migration through endothelial cells by scavenging the chemokine RANTES, thus suggesting a role for red blood cells in allergic inflammation [105].

Since human RBC are reported to express LFA-3/CD58 on the cell surface [13,37–39], it has been suggested by some authors that the enhancing effect that RBC have on T cell proliferation could be the result of molecular interactions between CD58, and CD2 present on T cells [28,29]. Characterization of the molecular mechanisms whereby RBC modulate T cell growth may contribute to a better understanding of T lymphocyte biology.
