    Additionally, caffeine that is present in tea could increase urine output, which might affect some psychotropic drugs. Because almost 95% of ingested lithium is eliminated in the urine, lithium blood levels greatly increase when caffeine is eliminated from the diet (Mester et al., 1995).     Machado-Vieira et al. (2001) suggest that Red Bull has three key psychoactive ingredients (caffeine, taurine, and inositol), which have previously been directly linked to manic symptomatology. Another possible explanation is that caffeine, which has a diuretic effect in the blood stream, reduces therapeutic lithium levels (Jefferson, 1988; Mester et al., 1995). Thus, although the consumption of Red Bull precipitated the sudden onset of acute mania in the case study of Machado-Vieira et al. (2001), it is not clear whether psychoactive ingredients directly triggered the manic episode or whether caffeine may have increased the excretion of lithium, which in turn precipitated the manic episode.
