HC-toxin consists of four building blocks, d-proline, l-alanine, d-alanine, and L-2-aminoepoxyoxodecanoic acid (AEO), a carbonyl group of the last is crucial for toxicity (Walton, Earle, & Gibson, 1982). As HDACs are prevalent among eukaryotes, the toxin is potentially active against diverse organisms.

It is synthetized non-ribosomally by a large enzyme termed HC-toxin synthetase (HTS).
