The presence of undifferentiated basal cells within the human tubal epithelium was first described by Pauerstein and Woodruff (1967). These authors assumed that these cells represented reserve cells that give rise to the ciliated and secretory cells of the tubal epithelium because mitotic figures are rarely seen in the tubal epithelium.
