Biochemical and histochemical alkaline glycerophosphatase in normal endometrium, endometrial hyperplasia, and adenocarcinoma

Abstract

Histochemical studies by the Gomori technique on alcohol-fixed tissue for endometrial alkaline phosphatase during the human menstrual cycle have been reported by several authors.1, 2, 3 It has been found that marked variations in the enzyme activity occurred during the menstrual cycle. The activity, high during the proliferative phase, is reduced during the secretory phase, and disappears several days before menstruation.

In view of these findings, the present study was undertaken to assay quantitatively this variation in the normal cycle and in certain abnormal states, and to reinvestigate the histochemical findings, using a fresh frozen tissue technique.8
