Abstract

Five cases are reported in which brain lesions were followed by acute tubular necrosis. In four of these cases the cerebral damage was the chief apparent cause of renal failure; in one, it was probably of etiologic significance. Although the cerebral lesions could not be localized accurately, they occurred predominantly in the posterior and orbital regions of the frontal lobe, which are closely related to the “visceral brain” or the limbic system.

Experimental data indicate that acute tubular necrosis may be caused by lesions of the brain through a mechanism of renal vasoconstriction.
