2023, Receptor Tyrosine Kinases in Neurodegenerative and Psychiatric DisordersHeterogeneity in major depressive disorder: The need for biomarker-based personalized treatments
2023, Advances in Clinical ChemistryCitation Excerpt :While lower VEGF levels do not necessarily contribute towards depression, studies have indicated reductions in VEGF correlate negatively with stress that normally coincides with depression [201,202]. Alternative findings have shown polymorphic variations of the VEGF gene may predispose the susceptibility of developing treatment-resistant depression [203]. The neurotrophic effects of VEGF may also explain the depressive symptoms in the elderly due to disruptions to angiogenesis and neurogenesis mechanisms, which have been implicated in age-related depression [204].
