2021, Experimental GerontologyCitation Excerpt :Primary afferent depolarization, in turn, initiates the Dorsal Root Reflex (DRR) characterized by antidromic (outflow) activity along primary afferent fibers (Willis, 1999). The most common neuropeptides released peripherally during neurogenic inflammation are substance P and CGRP, both of which have powerful vasoactive and proinflammatory properties by way of their direct influence on capillaries and immune cells (Birklein and Schmelz, 2008; Lin et al., 2000). Initiation and facilitation of primary afferent depolarization and neurogenic inflammation requires persistent afferent nociceptive input from a primary pathologic source (Sorkin et al., 2018).
