Abstract

Cyanoacrylate adhesives cure by addition polymerization initiated by adsorbed water, and it is possible that the propagating species is an ion-pair or free anion. The cure of silicones and isocyanates depends on water diffusing into the materials and then participating in condensation polymerization. Here there is a sharp advancing front of cured material, and the rate of advance depends on the water permeability of the latter.

The cure of adhesive starts near the surfaces which are in direct contact with the ambient moisture necessary to cure the RTV silicone and, according the datasheet, a cured depth of 7.5 mm can be obtained after 7 days. The cure depth as a function of time is available in datasheet (for this adhesive), however, this process can also be determined analytically [18–20]. A bonding fixture, to assist in the manufacture of small scale bonded tubular joints, was designed and machined from aluminium alloy.

There is a small increase in the cure timescale as the thickness is increased, from 9.3 to 11.3 h across the range, suggesting that there is a partial thickness effect. Consistent with Comyn and De Buyl's observations for sealants and adhesives, this is primarily attributed to the effect of the cure of the outer skin on the diffusion of water [8,9]. Additionally, the geometry of the specimen is such that outer skin dominates the torsional stiffness relative to the interior since both the contribution to the polar second moment of area and the shear strains are larger the further away material is from the axis of rotation.

There is a class of single component healing-agents, to which CA belongs, that cure via a polymerisation reaction. In the case of CA, this reaction is initiated by the presence of hydroxide ions [59–61] and may be considered effectively instantaneous with respect to the time scales considered in this study. Curing progresses as OH− ions diffuse through the body of CA and this process is significantly slower than the polymerisation reaction.

As previously indicated, it is important to describe the change in the cured film as a function of time. The depth of the cured film (or the position of the interface in the model) is presented by equation (1), which is deduced by the steady state mass diffusion and chemical reaction [7]. The drying process is illustrated in Fig. 2.
