The high rate of intimate partner violence, rape and childhood trauma contribute to the high prevalence of HIV amongst South African women (Andersson, Cockcroft and Shea, 2008; Jewkes et al., 2002, 2001; Kalichman and Simbayi, 2004). HIV infection puts individuals at particularly high risk for developing HAND.
