    The anal canal is surrounded by the anal sphincter complex, which primarily consists of 2 muscular layers: the inner layer is the internal sphincter and the outer layer is the external sphincter. The internal sphincter is composed of involuntary smooth muscle, which is contiguous with the circular smooth muscle of the lower rectum.9 The external sphincter is composed of striated muscle with strong voluntary contractions.
