Lu et al. found that <30% of the forces transmitted through the femur during normal gait were derived from the ground reaction force, with a much higher 70% driven from muscle contraction [1]. Similarly, Wehner et al. calculated the internal loads in the human tibia during gait and found that the forces were up to 4.7 times the body weight [2].
