Biostimulation and pheromones in livestock: A review
2023, Animal Reproduction SciencePig pheromones and behaviors: A review
2021, TheriogenologyCitation Excerpt :Reed et al. [22] used two different steroids, androst-4,16-dien-3-one and 5-alpha-androst-16-en-3-one, individually and in combinations with other steroids, and applied them to sows to determine their efficacy in eliciting estrus expression with the BPT. The elicited responses to the BPT were similar to those documented for the 5-α androstenone by Melrose et al. [21]. Taken together, Reed et al. [22] recommended using synthetic pheromones/compounds to aid in the detection of estrus and estimation of the optimum time of insemination, although these compounds did not produce the same response as a live boar.
Identification of potential pheromone source in sows
2019, Behavioural ProcessesCitation Excerpt :In boars, saliva is the major source of the pheromones androstenone and androstenol. These pheromones were partially successful in eliciting mating stance behavior in sows; a test useful to detect estrus (Melrose et al., 1971). Recently, one more pheromone (quinoline) was identified in boar saliva, which - together with androstenone and androstenol - elicited sexual behaviors in sows (Devaraj et al., 2018).
