Adult animals tend to have the highest prevalence due to the weak immunity evoked by an infection (Murrell, 1986; Roepstorff and Jorsal, 1989), and this was also evident in the present study. The highest prevalence was found in pre-partum sows where 63 % of the herds and 41 % of the samples were positive.

Positive faecal egg counts of T. suis were found in 23% of the Danish conventional herds in the 1980-ties (Roepstorff and Jorsal, 1989). This picture may vary according to the type of management, and more recent studies from the Netherlands demonstrate a higher prevalence in free-range (37.5%) and organic farms (36.4%) than on conventional farms (11.1%) (Eijck and Borgsteede, 2005).

In older studies, T. suis was found to be most prevalent in younger pigs, with a decline in prevalence with age (Jacobs and Dunn, 1969; Pattison et al., 1980; Roepstorff and Jorsal, 1989), while (Roepstorff and Nansen, 1998) found that breeding pigs had the highest prevalence. A number of experimental studies have been conducted on mono-species infections with T. suis (e.g. Pedersen and Saeed, 2001; Kringel and Roepstorff, 2006) and O. dentatum in pigs (Poelvoorde and Berghen, 1981; Christensen et al., 1995), but knowledge on how these two parasites influence each other when present together in mixed infections is limited.
