Thus, the absence of EBV in LEC suggests that other factors (e.g., environmental and genetic predisposition) may also contribute to the pathogenesis of the tumor.4,35,48,49,67,78 Not routinely performed, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of LMP1 shows that the 30-bp deleted variant (from the C-terminal region of the EBV LMP1 gene) is the most consistently identified within tumors found in patients from the endemic areas.
