  • A butterfly flaps its wings: Extinction of biological experience and the origins of allergy

2020, Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
    Citation Excerpt :

Indeed, for decades the field of allergic disease has been at the forefront of efforts to underscore the importance of early-life ecology for life-long immune health. Although the desire for such an approach has been advocated by experts in allergic diseases for decades,79 the new era of omics technologies (the ability to simultaneously measure large numbers of biomolecules that represent genes, genes expressions, proteins, and metabolites) provides optimism that researchers can identify biological markers of relevance to the total lived experience of individuals (including experiences of parents and grandparents) and entire populations.80-82 Such technologies, leveraged by the microbiome revolution, can help us pick apart the influences of dietary choices, stress, sleep, exercise, and psychological drivers of biological outcomes over time.

  • Planetary Health: From the Wellspring of Holistic Medicine to Personal and Public Health Imperative

    2019, Explore
    Citation Excerpt :

Coincident with the rise of environmentalism in the 1970s, the artificially drawn lines between personal, public and planetary health began to diminish. As the global health burdens shifted from infectious to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), greater emphasis was placed on the health-mediating role of lifestyle and the total lived environment; included in this perspective was the health implications of human-manufactured threats to life within the biosphere.1–3 Here in our commentary, we explore some of the early origins of the term planetary health, describe its associations with integrative medicine and discuss its historical relevance to health promotion and clinical care in the modern landscape.
