Investigation of DNA-cationic bolaform surfactants interaction with different spacer length
2013, Colloids and Surfaces B: BiointerfacesCitation Excerpt :Physical chemists have studied these systems for better understand the driving forces behind the molecular interactions and increase of the efficiency and number of uses for these systems. The strong associative behavior displayed by mixed systems of DNA and a cationic surfactant is well-known and is related to most of its applications such as extraction, purification, and counting [6–9]. Aggregation behavior of surfactants in presence of DNA provides context for special applications such as DNA purification and their transfection.
A comparative study of DNA extraction methods to be used in real-time PCR based quantification of ochratoxin A-producing molds in food products
2012, Food ControlCitation Excerpt :Thermal disruption of spores, digestion with proteinase K in combination with a CTAB buffer and a commercial extraction kit for fungal DNA (CTAB-EZNA method option 4a) showed no sign of inhibition of conventional PCR and a good recovery was obtained (over 98%). CTAB is a cationic surfactant that is added to solubilize the membranes (Alamäe & Järviste, 1995), which helps to remove capsular polysaccharides (Spitzer & Spitzer, 1992) and precipitate the DNA (Sibatani, 1970). However, the addition of 2-mercaptoethanol to the CTAB extraction buffer (CTAB-EZNA method option 4b) reduced the DNA yield.
