Do we need blood culture stewardship programs? A quality control study and survey to assess the appropriateness of blood culture collection and the knowledge and attitudes among physicians in Swiss hospitals
2022, European Journal of Internal MedicineCitation Excerpt :The impact of routinely collected FUBCs on the further management of the patients might be very limited and on the contrary, may even cause more harm than benefit to the patient, including additional diagnostics and prolonged or unnecessary antibiotic treatments, additional costs, working time and unnecessarily collected blood [4,5,8,33]. The latter may be associated with patient discomfort and anemia [38,39]. Altogether, BCs are important in the detection of severe infections and shoud not be withhold if indicated, but their collection should in all cases be considered thoroughly, avoiding the collection independly of the suspected or defined disease.

2014, HealthcareCitation Excerpt :The test is expensive and routinely ordered, frequently the most commonly ordered test in an ICU stay.3 This cost is in addition to the patient-related cost, chiefly pain, but also including infection, excessive phlebotomy,4 and rare but significant complications, such as peripheral median nerve damage,5 proximal skin necrosis,6 and iatrogenic arteriovenous fistulization.7 Considering these issues, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of implementation of an evidence-based protocol on variability of ABG ordering at a tertiary care facility.
