2022, Acta MaterialiaCitation Excerpt :One surface topography feature of note is the thermal groove which forms at triple lines where a GB emerges at the surface [8]. The shape and size of these grooves yield important information on the kinetics of surface diffusion [8,9], thermodynamics of the GBs [8,10–15], anisotropy of surface energy [16–19], and kinetics of GB migration [4,20–22]. GB grooves affect GB migration only in the immediate vicinity of free surfaces and, therefore, they can affect the overall kinetics of microstructure evolution only in cases when grain size is comparable to the extrinsic sample dimensions.
