Abstract

Brazil has a rich history of industrial architecture. The city of Piracicaba, located in São Paulo State in Brazil, is a prime example with its neoclassical architectural features in several factories that emerged during the Industrial Revolution. Preserving and documenting this architectural heritage is crucial to maintaining the Brazilian community’s historical values. The objective’s article is to apply digital scanning techniques, specifically terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and photogrammetry based unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to document the historical heritage and identify pathological manifestations on the facade of the chosen object of study, the Monte Alegre Chapel in Piracicaba-SP, known for its architectural and historical significance. The study’s methodology involves using photogrammetry with a double grid flight to survey the study area and analyze pathological manifestations on the Chapel’s facade using high-definition 360° panoramic images obtained from the TLS sensor. The case study of this paper is accomplished in Monte Alegre Chapel, a historical heritage located in a neighborhood of Piracicaba city, which used a TLS sensor to scan the facade of the study area Chapel, and the “Scan to HBIM” method is utilized to create an intelligent model enriched with historical information in a building information modeling (BIM) environment. A database is established to classify and validate the pathology documentation methodology. This study’s expected outcomes include documenting the historical heritage by identifying and cataloging pathological manifestations on the facade using TLS and photogrammetry sensors. Based on the results obtained, corrective and maintenance actions will be proposed to preserve this cultural asset. The HBIM model and the created database will be essential for documenting historical interventions over time, contributing to the valorization and conservation of Piracicaba-SP’s architectural heritage.
