Abstract

Psychosocial rehabilitation facilitates recovery of people who have a psychiatric disability by addressing their adaptive skills and supports. The relation between such skills and supports has not been examined robustly. This theoretical inquiry uses conceptual analysis and practical examples to argue and illustrate that adaptive skills and adaptive supports—the enhancement and maintenance of which is key to psychosocial rehabilitation—can be synergistic, i.e., skills can enhance and maintain supports and supports can enhance and maintain skills. Research is needed to leverage this synergism in order to further advance success and satisfaction of people who have a psychiatric disability.
