Abstract
Drought tolerance in rice is a complex trait collectively determined by numerous component traits. These traits are governed by many genes with huge environmental interactions, with low heritability, and thus are difficult to investigate. In this context, it is important to define the drought tolerance from practical point of view and design a screening protocol accordingly. The grain yield under defined stress conditions in comparison with normal condition is used to assess the ‘drought tolerance’. The new tools of phenomics are now available mainly for genomic studies and high-throughput screening. The protocols for imposing stress at different stages and intensity for different breeding populations are elaborated.
