Socio-environmental impacts on the Doce River basin, Brazil: a review from historic pollution to large disaster events

Abstract

In Brazil, the Doce River basin has been a region historically affected by intense mining activity. The apex of the problems related to mining in this region occurred in 2015 with the rupture of a mining tailings dam, which led to a series of socio-environmental impacts. In this review, we discuss in a chronological way about the environmental, biological and social impacts caused by mining activities and aggravated by the rupture of tailings dam in the Doce River basin. The review results report that the Doce River basin has a history of mining impacts even before the dam collapse shown mainly through heavy metal pollution. However, more than seven years after the dam rupture, researchers have described several impacts at different levels of the ecosystem: abiotic factors (changes in water parameters such as pH, turbidity and increased concentrations of heavy metals); molecular impacts (modulation of cellular detoxification and stress proteins); and community impacts (death of humans and animals). Through the analysis of the scientific literature, it became possible to reveal the continuity of the adverse effects of the tailings dam rupture over the years. The rupture of tailings dam in the Doce River basin, added to the historical pollution caused by mining, intensifies and promotes the continuity of the negative impacts on the environment and on human and animal health in the Doce River basin.
