Abstract

Flyrock is a dangerous environmental effect of blasting operations in mining/civil engineering. It has been reported to be the highest cause of an accident in blasting operations, and, therefore, detailed information about this phenomenon is very imperative. To accomplish the focus of the study, a detailed bibliometric review of the existing studies is first conducted to keep abreast of the trend of the methods of predicting this detrimental environmental effect. It was observed from the bibliometric review that the current means of locating the flyrocks may be subjected to parallax error and biases. Therefore, new drone-based technology is experimented on the field to capture the flyrock. ProAnalyst® software is used to analyse the drone-captured image (video). A demonstration of a soft computing (SC)-based model is then performed for predicting the drone-captured flyrock. The research has identified the reliable sources of information on the blast-induced flyrock and the possible problems associated with the traditional means of capturing the flyrock. Drone technology has been an alternative to the traditional method, and it demonstrated to be better in capturing than the traditional approach.
