Abstract
To enable the client to answer positively to his crucial question – ‘Can this person help me?’ – the therapist has to connect with the client in a professional, as well as in a personal way. The process of attuning and connecting is complicated by the fact that clients have differing wishes and expectations which can also be adverse to each other. To connect, the therapist must be able to fulfil multiple roles and to switch between those roles, to find the best fit to the clients’ preferences. The authors pose to use the Three-Roles-Model as a guideline, in which every role consistently relates to a specific theoretic framework and conversation model. Besides a demonstration of professional and personal role fulfilment, the therapist has to show he is able to provide safeness as well as the desired change. The therapist can handle the tension between validation on one hand and challenge on the other hand, in a way that moments of surprise can emerge which generate hope that change can occur. Finally, because forming an alliance is a unique personal process, the therapist has to ask feedback from the client and relatives to check if there’s a good-enough fit.
