Samenvatting
Genetica is even oud als de mens, maar toch begint de wetenschappelijke bestudering van zijn erfelijkheid pas bij Mendel in de negentiende eeuw. In iets meer dan een eeuw ontwikkelde zich de klinische genetica via het Human Genome Program naar het begrijpen van de bouw van het erfelijk materiaal. Rond 1960 werd chromosoomonderzoek mogelijk als oorzaak van geestelijke en/of lichamelijke aandoeningen, en daarop volgden biochemische en weer later mutatie-onderzoek op DNA-niveau. Vroegdiagnostiek van erfelijke ziekten, van voor de geboorte of voor er symptomen zijn, werd mogelijk, zoals voor erfelijke kankers en neurologische ziekten. Ook als grootschalig onderzoek van vele genen tegelijkertijd toegepast wordt, zullen betrokken families en klinici die opties binnen een voorzichtig perspectief hanteren. Vooralsnog zijn er zeer geringe mogelijkheden om de gevolgen van genmutaties te verhelpen of neutraliseren: daarvoor is de kennis, met name van de regulatie van gen-activiteiten, nog te beperkt, ondanks een formidabele internationale onderzoeksinspanning. De waarde van accurate klinische observatie, signalering en documentatie blijft voor betrokken families centraal, ook om toekomstige generaties zo goed mogelijk te informeren over hun eigen perspectieven.
