Zusammenfassung

Der vorliegende Artikel analysiert die Krise in Simbabwe sowie die historischen Ursachen des politischen und wirtschaftlichen Zusammenbruchs des Landes mit dem Ziel, historische Parallelen zu vergangenen Krisen aufzuzeigen. Eine Betrachtung der jüngsten politischen Verhandlungen, die in einer umfassenden politischen Vereinbarung mündeten, legt den Fokus auf die politischen Herausforderungen in Simbabwe. Hinzu kommt eine Analyse der aktuellen politischen Entwicklungen sowie des Engagements der internationalen Gemeinschaft.

Abstract

This article deals with the current crisis in Zimbabwe and analyses the historical roots of the economic and political meltdown in the country in order to reveal parallels to past crises. By addressing the recent political negotiations, which resulted in the Global Political Agreement, the author shifts the focus to the political challenges which Zimbabwe faces. Furthermore, the article offers an analysis of current developments and donor re-engagement in Zimbabwe.

  1. Die besondere Stellung des Militärs im Land wurde zuletzt im Juni 2008 in den Marange-Diamantenfeldern im Südwesten Simbabwes deutlich, in denen das Militär ungestraft Menschenrechtsverletzungen begehen konnte und die Minen plünderte. Vgl. dazu Human Rights Watch (2009).

  2. Die International Crisis Group empfahl bereits 2007, die Sanktionen auf Kinder von bereits sanktionierten Personen, die im Ausland studieren, auszuweiten. Es wurde berechnet, dass die Studiengebühren für einen Studenten in Harvard (USA) den Gebühren für 2365 Studenten an der Universität von Simbabwe entsprechen (International Crisis Group 2007).
