Memecylon idukkianum, a new species of Melastomataceae from Kerala, India

Summary

A new species of Melastomataceae, Memecylon idukkianum Nampy & Syam Radh, is described and illustrated from Mathikettan Shola National Park, Kerala, India. It is morphologically allied to M. varians Thwaites, an endemic species from Sri Lanka, but differs in the quadrangular branchlets, leaves with an acute or obtuse apex, petioles 5 – 9 mm long, 15 – 20-flowered cymes, white flowers and deep blue fruits. A detailed description, illustration, photographic plate, relevant notes and comparison table are provided to facilitate easy identification.
