Abstract

The Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire A (W-DEQ A) has been extensively used to investigate fear of childbirth in pregnancy. This study aimed to assess the psychometric characteristics of W-DEQ A in Hungarian pregnant women. The Hungarian translation of W-DEQ A, Beck Depression Inventory-Short Form and Beck Anxiety Inventory were administered to 343 healthy Hungarian pregnant women in late pregnancy. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed using SPSS and AMOS softwares, respectively. EFA yielded in four factors (‘Isolation’, ‘Lack of positive emotions’, ‘Moment of birth’ and ‘Fear’) of 30 items of W-DEQ A. CFA confirmed multidimensionality of the instrument with satisfactory indices. Each factor showed high reliability. The Cronbach’s α coefficient for the instrument was 0.92. W-DEQ A scores correlated fairly with anxiety and depression scores, indicating a distinction between fear of childbirth and general anxiety and depression. The Hungarian version of W-DEQ A proved to be a valid and reliable instrument in nulliparous and multiparous Hungarian women. Due to confirming the multidimensional structure of the instrument, calculation of a total score is suggested to be avoided.
