Abstract

At any instant, about 50% of the Earth’s atmosphere is cloud covered. Clouds appear familiar but mysterious. How do clouds form, and what is going on inside them? This article aims to unravel their mystery.

G. S. Bhat is a Professor at the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He holds a master’s in mechanical engineering and a PhD in aerospace engineering from IISc, Bengaluru. He works on clouds, tropical convection, flow turbulence, and atmospheric boundary layer.
