Abstract
Although the modern term “theranostic,” a combination of “therapy” and “diagnostic,” was introduced by John Funkhouser in 1998, the underlying concept of using biomarkers prepared with various types of radioisotopes for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes dates back to the 1940s. This article intends to give a brief overview of the history and current areas of application of nuclear medicine as well as future perspectives in the field, including nuclear medicine-based cancer treatments.
